The Cut Magazine…
March 7th, 2009 by admin…I did this photoshoot & interview with rad mag The Cut. Had so much fun at the Stowe Centre n big up to everyone especially Nendie, Nina & Nash…here is my interview..
“It all happened really quickly. we were sat in a bar and someone told us that they had a space available for rent. We went and viewed it, within the next few minutes we were like, right lets make our own store. It was literally that quick. I co own Donuts with 2 of my best friends Jamie & Tom, we had all worked together before & we valued our jobs & the opportunities that came with them, but sometimes there comes a time in life when you just have to do things for yourself & luckily at that point I wasn’t alone in feeling that way”.
“It was so fast that I guess we didn’t talk about money too much or where we would find the money so my first piece of advice would be that if you wanna start your own business just take a little bit of time to plan & save some money. The more thought & time you put into a venture, the more you will care about it & want to make it a success so don’t worry if you have to wait a little, because the planning bit is so fun & exciting!”
“We spend all our time promoting Donuts & spreading the word, always be as passionate about your business, as you were the day you first started. When you make something from nothing it becomes pretty special, you get the support from friends & family, then nationally, then worldwide & it just keeps you going. Never give up on what you want to do when the going gets tough (because it does get tough), that is my other piece of advice, I always say life is what you make of it”.
“Oh & don’t listen to anyone who says you are too young. Being young is the way forward, you have energy, ideas, you get inspired, you aren’t weighed down by debt & worries. Just be careful, think things through & always ask for advice from like minded people”.
“At Donuts we stock anything that we like, it’s a game of trial & error, we don’t still have all the same brands as the day we started, some worked, some didn’t. We have to think about what our customers want but we do try to push the brands that we love, because ultimately they are the people we want to support & it’s good to know the majority of our customers have trust in us. If you start buying in what you think is safe or what you think people will want to wear, then it takes away the enthusiasm & its hard to sell a garment that you don’t like. The brands we stock are (in no particular order) Rockers NYC, CTRL, Keep, Penfield, Edwin, Isaacymanu, Married to the Mob, Pointer, Too Much Possee, Trapstar, A.IN.T, Cheap Monday, Second Son, Suburban Bliss, Wrong Wroks, Clae & coming soon Alife, MadeMe & a few more”.
“A lot of people say how colourful the store is & I guess that’s pretty bang on. We love colours, crazy patterns & prints, we also love brands that have stories behind their collections, Rockers NYC being a great example. It’s an exciting day when their lookbook lands in our inbox, mad bright colours, adventurous cut & sew items, music related prints & the collections are always designed with such care”.
