Best of 2011: Daphni – Ye Ye

I think it’s fair to say that Daphni (aka Caribou) has been one of the best producers this year, releasing some absolute gems; notably this one on Four Tet’s Text Records, along with two killer edits on the elusive Resista Records and the massively in demand Ne Noya / Yes I Know on Jiaolong. Hoping 2012 will continue to bring good things from this man.

i

Best of 2011: Joy Orbison – Sicko Cell

i

Best of 2011: Pearson Sound – Deep Inside

Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman has been very present this year and he is far from making us feel jaded. Maybe it’s because he has so many different monikers?!
Anyway, this is a slice of perfect UK Funky (or Future Garage if you want to be really pernickety) for 2011. Night Slugs still representing.

i

Best of 2011: Maurice Donovan “Call My Name”

MASSIVE  jackin’ number from a favourite UK producer with many different monikers – if you don’t know who’s behind it at this stage, dig a little deeper!

i

Best of 2011: Objekt #1

It’s time to start thinking about end of year charts….so the following few posts will feature some of the favourites from the last 12 months.

To start off we have Berlin-based Objekt who was quite possibly one of few producers to make the marriage of dubstep and techno sound so so right. This record and the collaboration with SBTRKT for the Sbjekt #1 white label were major highlights.

Warm in Winter

You may have noticed from some of my previous posts that I am rather partial to making relationships between music and the weather. Maybe it’s just me but I think certain music just sounds so much better in certain weather. I could most definitely elaborate on this but at the risk of boring you to tears, I have chosen a couple of tracks that I think will warm your cockles.

Peaking Lights are a duo from California who make what they call “pop-psych”. Their album 936 is quite possibly one of my albums of the year. I would strongly recommend you check it out.

Hey Sparrow by Peaking Lights

Glass Candy singer IDA is probably the closest you will get to the beautiful piercing sounds of Annie Lennox. She is quite amazing. So much so that I have to put down two of the tracks here. Also if you are a fan of cover art, you need to check out theirs or any on the Italians Do It Better label – it’s killer.

GLASS CANDY / WARM IN THE WINTER

Daphni aka Caribou aka Dan Snaith has had a winning streak of releases this year, coming out with a sound that is consistently so unique to him. You would do very well to check out the rest of his stuff – I will eat my hat if you’re disappointed!

Throwback

An oldie but a goodie from the one and only Slum Village to warm your cockles!

Jay Simon in the mix

Get familiar with Jay Simon if you what’s good for you. His recent release on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label, “Faith”, has been on heavy rotation here. You might recognise those RnB vocals – it’s all in the title. Anyway, since that very limited release, everyone has been chomping at the bit for more from Jay. Check him out in the mix HERE to find out what you can expect.
Also check out the clip for “Faith” below. (A radio rip, I know, but it’s proof of just how limited this release was!)
