Clams Casino – Drowning

This downbeat Hip Hop coming from Clams Casino is exactly the type of thing you want in your ears to compliment the autumnal weather which is FINALLY upon us. This unofficial video for “Drowning” (from the Rainforest EP), is drenched with lush visuals which perfectly compliment the track.

If you’re looking for a little more where this came from, check out this free mixtape of instrumentals by Clams Casino which was apparently originally intended to be used as beats destined for the likes of Lil B and Souljah Boy!

MUSIC | Mo’ Kolours

Mo’ Kolours is a London based musician whose Mauritian heritage plays a really interesting part in his music. When you listen to his first EP, “Drum Talking” you get a whole smorgasbord of influences including Sega (traditional Mauritian / Creole sounds), Hip Hop, Afrobeat and there’s even some psych themes thrown in there. He has already created quite a stir here in the UK having done some work with the amazing Paul White and done an incredible set for Boiler Room. Check out the video for “Biddies” below. Nice, trippy images!

The “Drum Talking EP” is out now on One Handed Music and is out on vinyl, digital and cassette tape (my favourite!) HERE.

I will leave you with the killer set from The Boiler Room

EVENTS | Phonica Records 8th Birthday

What an amazing night at Great Suffolk Street Warehouse. Incredible DJs (including the likes of Joy Orbison, Soul Clap and of course the Phonica boys!) and an incredible atmosphere. We definitely celebrated the right way! Here’s to another eight!

I got slightly carried away blowing out the candles.

Hodgy x Jonti

Odd Future contingent Hodgy Beats and new Stones Throw recruit Jonti recently collaborated and came through with this rather good little track called Nagoya. They must like Tokyo! Check it out:

This last week has been a true testament to how much DJ Mehdi touched people – the tributes have come in from everyone from Stones Throw to Drake to Primo. That was the most poignant for me – how his influence and work was recognised in the hip hop community. Hip Hop was my first love and Mehdi played a big part in that through my adolescence when my uncle and my cousin were schooling me on all that was good in French hip hop.

The “dédicaces” that have been coming in from every corner of the world so I have decided to choose a few that I feel have really represented his music for me.

I think that ABCDR Du Son have put together the best tribute to Mehdi and his early productions. Check it out here.

Pedro Winter also kindly shared the “Loukoums” mix that Mehdi did a few years back as an hommage to Dilla and the “Donuts” album. It was originally intended to be as a limited CD for friends but now you can download it:

And finally, Feadz  has put together a tribute mix which I’m sure encompasses Mehdi more than any of us could know and something that I am sure would have made him proud:

One week on and to be quite frank, it still doesn’t seem like this really happened.  For most of us, while it is a shock and the sadness is still palpable, we cannot come close to understanding how this must weigh on the hearts of Mehdi’s family and friends. We are with them.

Mehdi pour toujours.

Vintage Uncle L

Just when you thought all of the Hip Hop heavyweights had used THAT sample from ESG’s “UFO” (Big Daddy Kane, Gang Starr, Dilla, Doom…), someone finds a lost LL Cool J recording “stuck behind a radiator”.

17 years later, Slice of Spice are keeping it old school and releasing the track on vinyl:

Hello My Name Is Laetitia

Hello, I am new here!

I am from Dublin (via France) and now live in London where I am currently working in the best record store in the world (seriously!).

I will be talking about music.

No time like the present so in the spirit of clinging on to every last drop of summer I can, here is one of my favourites over the last few months. The video reminds me so much of MTV “The Grind” – very 90′s and some very bad dancing!
