SOFIDONUTS MEETS EVOL HEIST

I recently caught up with design and customising duo Evol Heist, to ask some questions about their beautiful jewellery creations. We even managed to get a few exclusive snaps of their upcoming collections. Here’s what they had to say…

Hello! introduce yourself…
We are Evol Heist: Made up of M & JANDU.

Can we get a bit of background on Evol Heist?
Evol Heist was created in January 2010. It really only formed due to demand from friends and style lovers off of the street who would ask where i get my pieces from, and i’d tell them “I make them”. This pretty much started to build up a customer and fan base… and also the brand!

Evol Heist’s main objective is to only produce limited numbers of pieces per collection, because even though we sell to the world, its nice having an exclusive piece with only 10- 20 pieces ever made. Everything from sketched design to finished product is made by us and made in Birmingham!

Tell us about your journey to get to where you are now…
I made the majority of my jewels/ accessories since i was about 16 because i could never find what i wanted in stores or the internet… Everything kind of began to snowball from there. I started by creating pieces from antique/ broken/ vintage jewelry… even Hot- wheels cars and 70’s Action- man toy guns and more and more people wanted the same pieces. I began to sell them about a year ago to friends and a year later, We’re making our pieces from scratch and selling to the world!

I took Jandu on as a partner in May 2010 because he’s a technical genius. He can project what i’m seeing in my head (or one of my crappy post- it doodle designs) and translate it into an image ready to be made!

Where do you find your inspiration?
We find inspiration from everywhere. I have a crazy imagination and actually get visions in my dreams, i’ve found myself waking up to doodle an idea on a ‘post- it’ note in the middle of the night. A lot of our inspiration comes from space and nebulas, animals and nature, geometry, war and ancient cultures.

Do you have an all time favourite Evol Heist piece?
M: I’m finding that our pieces and designs are improving as we create them, i’m in love with the collection we’re making right now because it was inspired by the stars in the night sky! We’ve used Swarovski crystals as the main feature of these pieces. I can’t narrow it down to one favorite, i’ve enjoyed creating (and wearing up to now) The Illegal Leopard ring, The Evol Chanel tee, the logo collection and the Cartoon Bamboo Earrings!! I’m really looking forward to our Halloween launch- End of Oct!!!

Who would you really love to see wearing your jewellery?
So tough to answer… The Queen? Haha!! I think pioneers in art, fashion and music… Anyone who has a positive impact on the world… yeah, i’d be happy with that!

You have a new collection coming out super soon, hit us with it…
We have 3 collections being launched from mid Oct- January 2011. Right now we’re working on our first winter piece called ‘The Stars’. It’s inspired by the sky at night.

I was initially going to re-create the constellations to be worn on your body, but the concept became too complexed as there are 88 constellations and people might not get the idea, nor like the irregular pattern placements of the crystals, so i focused more on the floating and twinkling of the stars.

I have to say I’m really happy with how its coming along and can’t wait to shoot and launch it!

Can we get a sneak peak?
Hehe… why not, we’ll give you some exclusive pictures….

I’m really good at…
EATING… especially cake!

But I’d like to be really good at…
Time travel!

Q’s with Primrose Peach

I’ve always been interested in Taxidermia ever since my Auntie Ruby had her cat stuffed and various other animals around her house. She lived on a farm and was adorable. When my pet Guinea Pig Spud died I wanted to stuff him and preserve him forever needless to say my parents weren’t fans of that idea! I am happy to interview my friend Leah AKA Primrose Peach on her time as being a taxidermist.

Age: 24
Job:Taxidermist

Why do you think you were put on this earth?
to bring back animals from the dead

Tell us a bit more about being a taxidermist?
I make taxidermy pieces for artists, movies props and collectors.

Where did your love for Taxidermy spring from?
It originally stemmed from when I was around the age of 14 and I went on a school trip to Austria. The ski lodge we were staying at was covered in taxidermy. Ever since then I’ve been fascinated by it. When I left school and I was doing fashion styling, I began trying to make small pieces for fashion shoots and then I went on to make bigger and better pieces. Now it is my only love.

Who’s the best person you’ve worked with?
I went to school in Texas to learn taxidermy and the family who taught me were quite amazing. I would love to go back and visit them one day.

And the worst?
Doing taxidermy you don’t really work with anybody. Its quite a solitary job.

I have absolutely no idea because everything about this earth annoys me!

I shoot glamour / lingerie for the lad’s mags! it’s a really fun job, the girls are always so lovely. I also dabble in fashion, which I hope to go into in the future.

Where is your favourite place to be?
London

Who’s the best person you’ve worked with?
Coco Minnie, my stylist

And the worst?
Hmmm. I actually can’t think of anyone, I’ve been lucky!

We see you’ve done work for NUTS, FRONT magazine and other various publications, how did you get into that?
I began building up my portfolio by testing new faces for Girl Management (top glamour agency) which was a really good starting point because it meant I was instantly working with the most important agents in London. From there I was approached by a syndication agency who wanted to sell my work, and from there magazine editors became aware of my work. I knew Front from a modelling stint a year earlier, so I always kept them up to date with my work.

Any other good press?
I get published a lot in Denmark and Australia which is interesting?!

Hello I Like You

Why do you think you were put on this earth?

To work out how to get back to my other planet.

Tell us a bit more about your creations?

I make pieces that I want for myself, the last collection was very Disneyland / lolita / cute overload. Bows, frills, hearts and many many flower headbands. I think I will make the next collection a lot more dark. I’m currently working on a new secret project as well as planning some photo shoots and some new pieces for Winter.

Where is your favourite place to be?

Oh, umm too many. Here it would be either be alone in my bedroom or in the Lake district, otherwise In LA or NYC with treasured and missed friends.

Who’s the best person you’ve worked with?

I only work with people I think are great. I did a collaboration with David David a couple of years ago and they were all so lovely. I work mostly alone so if it’s with other people then it’s always people I admire, I now have a hardworking and talented assistant who I love and then armfuls of uber friends who photograph, model, design, make music and everything in between. Everyday I feel very lucky.

And the worst?

I don’t work with bad people and if I did I wouldn’t name them.

(credit)

We see you’ve met Kanye West through your knicker making… How was that?

He came to visit the DavidDavid exhibit.. and he was very polite and took his sunglasses off to shake my hand.

And also Peaches Geldof?

We are friends already, but joined up on a small project for a photo shoot for Vivetta (a designer I love), Peaches was modeling and I was loaning hair accessories.

Any other good press?

I’m lucky to have been given some very flattering press over the past three years, and also feedback from customers and such sweet emails from people who like the brand. It’s consistent hard work that I put everything in to and these are the things that keep me wanting to keep on keeping on.

Top 5 people?

Family, Friends, Kitty, Mickey Mouse, Roy Orbison.

Top 5 blogs?

White Lighting, L’ Age d’Or, Exceedingly Good Keex, Everything Style, Astronomy Picture of the Day.

Top 5 animals?

(current) Cat, Red Panda, Flamingo, Tapir, Otter.

Top 5 movies?

Badlands, Escape to Witch Mountain, Alice in Wonderland (original), The Dark Crystal, Singles.

The Cut Magazine…

…I did this photoshoot & interview with rad mag The Cut. Had so much fun at the Stowe Centre n big up to everyone especially Nendie, Nina & Nash…here is my interview..

“It all happened really quickly. we were sat in a bar and someone told us that they had a space available for rent. We went and viewed it, within the next few minutes we were like, right lets make our own store. It was literally that quick. I co own Donuts with 2 of my best friends Jamie & Tom, we had all worked together before & we valued our jobs & the opportunities that came with them, but sometimes there comes a time in life when you just have to do things for yourself & luckily at that point I wasn’t alone in feeling that way”.

“It was so fast that I guess we didn’t talk about money too much or where we would find the money so my first piece of advice would be that if you wanna start your own business just take a little bit of time to plan & save some money. The more thought & time you put into a venture, the more you will care about it & want to make it a success so don’t worry if you have to wait a little, because the planning bit is so fun & exciting!”

“We spend all our time promoting Donuts & spreading the word, always be as passionate about your business, as you were the day you first started. When you make something from nothing it becomes pretty special, you get the support from friends & family, then nationally, then worldwide & it just keeps you going. Never give up on what you want to do when the going gets tough (because it does get tough), that is my other piece of advice, I always say life is what you make of it”.

“Oh & don’t listen to anyone who says you are too young. Being young is the way forward, you have energy, ideas, you get inspired, you aren’t weighed down by debt & worries. Just be careful, think things through & always ask for advice from like minded people”.

“At Donuts we stock anything that we like, it’s a game of trial & error, we don’t still have all the same brands as the day we started, some worked, some didn’t. We have to think about what our customers want but we do try to push the brands that we love, because ultimately they are the people we want to support & it’s good to know the majority of our customers have trust in us. If you start buying in what you think is safe or what you think people will want to wear, then it takes away the enthusiasm & its hard to sell a garment that you don’t like. The brands we stock are (in no particular order) Rockers NYC, CTRL, Keep, Penfield, Edwin, Isaacymanu, Married to the Mob, Pointer, Too Much Possee, Trapstar, A.IN.T, Cheap Monday, Second Son, Suburban Bliss, Wrong Wroks, Clae & coming soon Alife, MadeMe & a few more”.

“A lot of people say how colourful the store is & I guess that’s pretty bang on. We love colours, crazy patterns & prints, we also love brands that have stories behind their collections, Rockers NYC being a great example. It’s an exciting day when their lookbook lands in our inbox, mad bright colours, adventurous cut & sew items, music related prints & the collections are always designed with such care”.
