Jay Simon in the mix
October 25th, 2011 by LaetitiaGet familiar with Jay Simon if you what’s good for you. His recent release on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oats label, “Faith”, has been on heavy rotation here. You might recognise those RnB vocals – it’s all in the title. Anyway, since that very limited release, everyone has been chomping at the bit for more from Jay. Check him out in the mix HERE to find out what you can expect.
Also check out the clip for “Faith” below. (A radio rip, I know, but it’s proof of just how limited this release was!)
COFFIN ON CAKE Press Day, The Vinyl Factory.
October 19th, 2011 by ElizaToday COFFIN ON CAKE PR held a S/S ’12 press day at The Vinyl Factory in Soho. Sofidonuts were invited to come down and take a a look at what some of COFFIN ON CAKE‘s brands had to offer for Spring/Summer next year. It was a great chance to see urban street wear all out fresh and some of it was proper nice. Surfdome.com in particular have really seemed to up their game, with recognising great up and coming brands such as One Teaspoon and Afends, and had plenty of their garms about. Other brands showcased included Pull-in underwear, Converse, Herschel bags and Fallen. Was a rad day, was well looked after and given a very exciting doggy bag. Big thanks to the Coffin crew and all the brands that had taken part. Enjoy the snaps!

September 20th, 2011 by LaetitiaThis last week has been a true testament to how much DJ Mehdi touched people – the tributes have come in from everyone from Stones Throw to Drake to Primo. That was the most poignant for me – how his influence and work was recognised in the hip hop community. Hip Hop was my first love and Mehdi played a big part in that through my adolescence when my uncle and my cousin were schooling me on all that was good in French hip hop.
The “dédicaces” that have been coming in from every corner of the world so I have decided to choose a few that I feel have really represented his music for me.
I think that ABCDR Du Son have put together the best tribute to Mehdi and his early productions. Check it out here.
Pedro Winter also kindly shared the “Loukoums” mix that Mehdi did a few years back as an hommage to Dilla and the “Donuts” album. It was originally intended to be as a limited CD for friends but now you can download it:

And finally, Feadz has put together a tribute mix which I’m sure encompasses Mehdi more than any of us could know and something that I am sure would have made him proud:

One week on and to be quite frank, it still doesn’t seem like this really happened. For most of us, while it is a shock and the sadness is still palpable, we cannot come close to understanding how this must weigh on the hearts of Mehdi’s family and friends. We are with them.
Mehdi pour toujours.
